About the Department
The Department of Economics has trained analytical and policy thinkers since the college's founding in 1947, launching the region's first MA Economics programme in 1964. Six decades of academic leadership — from Dr. Akhtari Shareef through Prof. Iqbal Bakhat, Prof. Ghazanfar Mehmood Bhatti, Prof. Altaf Hussain, and Prof. Sajid Ali to today's Head of Department, Dr. Irfan Nazir — have built a department committed to quality teaching, research, and evidence-based analysis, preparing graduates to understand socio-economic issues at local, national, and international levels.
Why Study with Us
Faculty research spans macroeconomics, development economics, public finance, environmental and international economics, and labour economics, with students trained in EViews, STATA, SPSS, and MS Excel for applied analysis; an ADP Economics (2-year) track with a required dissertation is also offered alongside the BS. The department marked its first BS convocation in 2024, the same year one of its students won the Gold Medal in Economics at the University of the Punjab's 132nd Convocation, alongside a growing record of student engagement — from the RAASTA-PIDE International Conference to a study tour of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. Alumni include Dr. Muhammad Idrees (Quaid-i-Azam University), Dr. Nisar Ahmad (Sultan Qaboos University, Oman), Dr. Abdul Jalil (National Defence University), Dr. Sadaf Shahab (FUUAST), Dr. Atif Ali Jaffri (University of Gujrat), and Zaheer-ud-Din Babar Awan, former Federal Minister for Law.
